student club year end at The Freehouse
Just to let everyone know we'll be having our student club year end party at the end of April. Venue will likely be the Freehouse on Spadina. The club will be buying appetizers, so it will be PFYOB event. First hour will be an informal talk about events in Ukraine surrounding the election and the controversial "reforms" that have happened since. After that we'll be discussing plans and ideas for next year and voting in a new board.

5 days until Haydamaky!
Okay, so by now I hope you've heard about our concert... if you're looking for the webpage, turn to ukrainianstudents.ca/concert
If you're not familiar with Haydamaky, you can find youtube videos of their live stuff on the webpage. And if you've heard their stuff on cd, their live music is spectacularly energetic - a must see show.
More ongoing news and details will be published to the blog on the concert webpage as they come up.
Memories of Chornobyl
Haydamaky's song, Meni Zdayetsia - a song about the pain endured by victims of the Chornobyl disaster to this day, reminded me so much of this photo essay (with spoken text):
Voices of Chornobyl.
Getting ready for 2009-10
A quick post to get things rolling for what is going to be an awesome year at the university.
First off, we're working on finalizing details for Haydamaky on September 24th. We're working on finalizing our venue, which will likely either be Louis' or at the Odeon.
Secondly, we have a beer night/ukrainian dj/ukrainian karaoke planned soon, date pending finalization of the Haydamaky concert.
Thirdly, SUSK west (association of ukrainian students of western canada) are planning to have a conference in early november IN SASKATOON! More deets soon!
In other news, I (Yakym) was away this summer at a MYHO/UNYF leadership concert for a weekend and have some ideas pertaining to the overall direction of the group, or the creation of a second associated group that will have an outreach for young ukrainians ages 16-30 but is not necessarily specific to university students. This will allow a stronger mandate and group numbers and allow us to have increased relevance, with increased exposure to newly arrived Ukrainians. We have programming ideas for this group that wouldn't be possible within the university format due to calendar restrictions, but has a strong academic/cultural basis... more to come.
PS tunnel membership drive details coming soon!
Їжа for thought...

From the homepage:
"Due to the unprecedented economic situation and the Board of Directors’ commitment to maintaining the Foundation’s capital base, the Shevchenko Foundation will not be accepting any new grant applications in April and will defer applications until further notice."

year end wrapup at The Freehouse April 29th @ 8pm
Our year-end/post-final gathering before everyone heads home for the summer, will take place at the Freehouse (Spadina Cres across from the Freehouse) on Wednesday April 29th at 8pm... everyone is welcome to attend. The meeting is going to be like totally informal, dude... and will be chance to talk about what we want to do as a group next year. There will be several spots open on the general exec. Participating in the students association is a great chance for students to develop new skills in community building, marketing, high-profile event planning (concert) and awesome skills you can apply to future careers. Next year we will also be funding several members of the executive to go to the SUSK conference, a great chance to network with other members of the Ukrainian-Canadian student community at large. The last 2 conferences were in Montreal and Toronto, with live music and events all weekend long... something not to be missed.
The time is now to get involved.
A Kingdom Reborn Film Friday March 27
From the PCUH press release:
PCUH Screens Film and Invites Producer/Director Dani Stodilka to STMMarch 27, 2009 | 7:00 pm | Fr. O’Donnell Auditorium, STMOn March 27, the PCUH will present the film “A Kingdom Reborn: Treasures from Ukrainian Galicia” produced and directed by noted Toronto documentary filmmaker Dani Stodilka. The English language film offers, within a historical context, glimpses of Galicia – current day Western Ukraine -- and the ancient city of Lviv, whose architectural monuments and artistic treasures offer an exquisite blending of the Byzantine and Latin aesthetic. The film showcases both Lviv and the region as constantly shifting arenas where diverse and complex identities evolved. Highlighting the stunning visual legacy that is Ukrainian, the film also reflects the brilliant Armenian, Jewish, Austrian and Polish contributions to the artistic and architectural heritage of Galicia.
As part of the Ukrainian Artists Invitational Program, the producer/director of the film Dani Stodilka will be attendance at the screening of film. The Ukrainian Artists Invitational is a community outreach program of the PCUH. The program provides an opportunity for invited artists to share their most recent work by way of public presentation, performance or workshop. Past artists who have been invited include John Paskevich (filmmaker), Luba Goy (actress and comedian), and Julian Kytasty (musician). The objective of the Ukrainian Artists Invitational Program is to help promote a wider appreciation of the Ukrainian arts scene while raising scholarship funds at these events.
Admission is free to this event although donations will be accepted in support of scholarships for the STM Study Abroad in Ukraine Program – Spring Session in Ukraine.
